BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE -or- BOOTYJUICE BOOTYJUICE AKA "Timmy, put the camera down. It's time for bed."

Release Date 06Sep2024

Scusa, ma questa cacca è fredda.

BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE is the sequel to 1988's BEETLEJUICE also directed by TIM BURTON, when his "thing" was still fresh and interesting. That movie, with a screenplay by MICHAEL MCDOWELL and WARREN SKAAREN - based on a story by McDowell and LARRY WILSON. There have been several attempts over the past 36 years to make this sequel, first as "Beetlejuice in love", then as "Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian".

The 88' movie concerns a recently deceased couple who attempts to rid their former home of its new occupants buy retaining the services of a "Bio-Exorcist" - the title character. It was charming, funny, and had a compelling and quirky story that was key to the movie's success (75 mil on a 15 mil budget). It also inspired an animated series that ran for four seasons.

NO SPOILERS

THIS movie, set three decade after the first, has former cute goth girl Lydia as a TV show sell-out (A little self-awareness from Burton?), her step-mother Delia is an even bigger flake, Lydia's daughter hates her mom... because, and Charles - the Deetz patriarch is dead. This death is the catalyst for the events of the movie, along with several side-stories and characters that don't really matter... oh, and Beetlejuice's wife and some shite. A confusion of f#ckery, and all the charm of a chili-fart.

THE GOOD:

I like the inclusion of the stop-motion bits. MICHAEL KEATON and CATHERINE O'HARA really try, it's admirable. The Fellini-like flashback is fun. JENNA ORTEGA delivers the best lines in the movie, but ultimately is just a fetch-quest.

THE BAD:

The movie feels like a choose-your-own-adventure story, if you chose everything. The plot and action is all over the place. It leans too heavily into camp, and goes way too far with everything else - including overusing the Beetlejuice character (Keaton was only in 17 minutes of the first one). The SOUL TRAIN... no B.S. The callbacks, while not extravagant, are oddly placed and don't land (Imagine "Get away from her, you bitch!" while Ripley is on the can). The misuse of "Regnava nel silenzio" by Donizetti (Used perfectly in 88'), and "Day-O" by Harry Belafonte. Wasting any part of MONICA BELLUCCI. MacArthur Park... f#ck you, Tim Burton.

SEE IT:

Only out of curiosity, and only if you must. I'm not certain it's even worth a stream... Hoe.

DON'T SEE IT:

Congratulations, you've managed to spare your remaining sanity another crushing blow, after wisely avoiding The Crow. 💩
