GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS -OR- Goddamn, the cheese!
Big G gets his second go around, third if you count the 1998 version (I don't. Neither do the Japanese. Something to that methinks...), in this third addition to Legendary Entertainment and Warner Brothers MONSTERVERSE film series.
It ain't half bad... not GREAT though. Cheesy and kinda stupid, like your slightly slow cousin Larry who thinks its funny to snort Country Time lemonade…
THE GOOD:
This movie is kind of a treat for fans of the Godzilla series or Toho kaiju fans in general. The easter eggs are many and reference much of the run of the Godzilla character from 1954 to the present. The monster stuff in this movie is what most will come for and it delivers. I enjoyed it as I have enjoyed the series from a young age. Godzilla stopped being a poignant statement of man's hubris from obtaining atomic power a while ago after embracing the golden, salty voluptuousness of nuclear nacho CHEESE.
THE BAD:
The human element in this film, from characterization to motivation, is so insubstantial, it's wonder they even bothered. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I didn't come for the humans. I came to see Big G stomp shit! However, if you're gonna have 'em (Ze humans), might want to make their motivations a bit more plausible and less eyeroll inducing.
For serious…
THE VERDICT:
Come for the monsters and tearassery.
Ignore the humans.
